MILEY: People see me as this perfect Disney star, and the moment I put out a record that says, “I’m not 11-years-old anymore,” people look down on me. That’s why I’ve always looked up to you. When you came out, people were shocked that there was a chick who wanted to rock as hard as the guys.

Joan Jett: I find it really fascinating why the Runaways and I took so much shit in the beginning. We sang about what we knew: going out, hanging out, partying, falling in love, and learning about sex. And we weroprae lambasted for it! How dare girls think about sex? Now it’s all anybody in the top ten sings about.

Miley Cyrus: I guess women can sing a lot more freely now, but it’s also about who can push the limits the most. As much as times have changed, people still look down on women who stand for something. Sometimes I’m listening to the radio, and I’m like, Who the hell is this? It sounds like the last thing I heard.

Joan Jett: The fans are willing to give artists a shot at experimentation, it’s more the industry that won’t allow it. In my day it was, “We won’t play two women in a row,” no matter what kind of music it was

Miley Cyrus: There has been nothing I’ve ever heard you say that I didn’t believe. You were always very genuine. I always connected to that. We all have that commercial song that everyone loves, but every song on the album shouldn’t be only about that. I can listen to your albums and feel like I know you, or like I’ve met you.

Joan Jett: I think the trick is making sure you’re always making the music not only for yourself, but for the fans. Hopefully, Miley, you’ve learned that from me.

Miley Cyrus: More than that, also knowing how to treat people. I always get nervous to meet somebody who I look up to because you’re like, “Shit, what if they’re not as cool in person, what if they’re not really what they sing about?” I think the reason I love you even more now that we’ve met is that everything you sing about in your songs is who you really are. You see it in the way an artist treats people when they’re not on stage.

Joan Jett: Thank you. I have to thank the parents for that. It is important how you treat people. If you have an interaction with a fan, whether it’s from the stage and it’s the meeting of the eyes or a smile, or if you meet someone and shake hands and sign an autograph, those are moments that they remember forever. If you’re nice and you’re kind and you’re caring—oh my God, that’s never going to be forgotten! But if you’re a bitch and you have better things to do, they remember that too. That’s not how I want to be remembered, because it’s not who I am.

Miley Cyrus: I was just another fan of yours when we met. Listening to your albums can help a person through a little bit of everything

Joan Jett: I was watching your dad on TV. He was doing an interview and talking about you and your family and your career. You’d been in the press a lot lately, and I was thinking to myself about my own life and how difficult it must be to live your life as a teenager with the paparazzi and the amount of press you’re surrounded by. I thought to myself, Wow, it was kind of a blessing that we didn’t have that stuff when I was growing up in the Runaways, because I just don’t know how I would have dealt with it.

Miley Cyrus: I was listening to the Runaways a lot because of what you were talking about and the way that I felt, and the things that I wanted to say but couldn’t because people would have looked down on me. It gave me a lot of help and a lot of light when I was going through a lot of stuff with my family and everything was so public in my life. I saw the Runaways movie with my brother for his birthday, and that was the moment I felt like, Shit, they were going through the same things I was going through but at a different time.

Joan Jett: But we didn’t have to deal with the cameras. I’m thinking, you poor thing! If you make a mistake, it’s public, and you’ve got to live with it for the rest of your life. People never don’t make mistakes. People do. I mean, it’s life. You’re living life, that’s what happens. It’s fascinating to think that you grow up in that.

Miley Cyrus: And you have to apologize. I love that you never apologized for who you were. It’s something I’ve had to learn. When you do something the world doesn’t agree with, to say, “I’m really sorry, it was a big mistake, and I hope you guys can forgive me.” Forget that! You want to forgive yourself and you owe an apology to the people around you who love you, but I’m sick of feeling as if I owe someone an apology for being who I am.

Joan Jett: It’s also ridiculous to think that teenagers are the same across the board. There are girls and boys who go through a lot of these issues, and I think it’s disrespectful to them to pretend they don’t exist. Whether you’re talking about sex, whether to have it, how to do it properly, or drugs, all that stuff. You want kids to be smart. People in my day weren’t even allowing us to bring it up. It was like, Girls don’t do that. So how can you even deal with that besides rolling your eyes and playing a loud chord?

After even years in Los Angeles, are you a Southern or California girl these days?
I’m not a big fan of LA, I’ve got to be honest. I like being able to work here, but any chance to go back home [to Tennessee], I love it. People really take life for granted in California. It makes me sad sometimes. So I have to give myself that reality check every once in a while and go back home. Everyone [in LA] is so busy and everyone is trying to be better than the other person, and everyone has got so much going on. Nashville life is just so laid back and people enjoy every second of life that they have

Do you miss Hannah Montana?
No [laughs]. I miss the family vibe, but I don’t miss the routine at all. I was so bored doing the same thing every day. It’s a lot easier not being on a show, to live my life a little bit and do some of the others thing that I want to do, I don’t have to be back at a certain time. You’re not worrying about a cast schedule or what the producers are going to think. I’m so grateful that I was able to be on that show, but even my little sister, who’s 11, wants to go into acting. I just say, “Just wait, dude.” Because the way you’re going to be when you’re my age and the way you are right now are so different. Don’t put yourself in a situation where people re going to think of you as only one thing. You’re going to change a lot. It interferes with your growing up if you’re not strong enough and you’re not sure who you want to be. I’m glad I’m not a character any more and able to be me.

During the run of Hannah Montana, did you ever fantasise that you had a secret life as an ordinary schoolgirl, like your character Miley Stewart?
There were times, for sure, when I thought that – it would be amazing. There are some artists who get a chance to do that sort of thing – people who have such a different personality when they go onstage and when they take time off – and that’s kind of what I’m doing right now. But there were times during Hannah Montana when I wanted that, for sure.

What sort of things would you have done if you could have had that secret life?
People lose a lot of respect for other human beings when they find out you’re famous, because they’ve never experienced it. I’m with my boyfriend, for instance, and we’re walking around. We’re sure that no-one is taking our picture. We are sure of it. No one has followed us. No is here. And than, a few hours later, it’s life, “Miley Cyrus Alert.” She was seen with a fan in public, they were kissing and hugging, and you’re like, “What the hell? I didn’t see anybody taking our photograph that day.” I think that’s what I would have enjoyed most – just being able to be in public and not feel like I’m being watched. You know, my dad and me, we’re pretty good with fans. We don’t mind taking pictures if they ask. But when they don’t ask, that’s a whole different level of weird.

The Gypsy Heart Tour was earlier this year, and you went to cool places in South America and Australia. When you’re on tour like that, do you have time to be an ordinary tourist?
I make sure of that. I’ve wanted to go on tour for a while, get back on the road. But I did this tour mainly because I wanted to travel, I love to travel. I made it so that we had a show and then two days off, a show and then two days off. I got to enjoy places a lot. It was funny [because] some places were out of control and I couldn’t walk around. But other countries were really respectful and [people] wanted me to know that they wanted me to have a good time in their country. There are some places I’d really like to go back to and see more of, but be a little more incognito.

What are some of the spots that really stuck out from the tour?
I’m in love with Argentina. I would not mind staying there for a while because I had the best time in Argentina. We went out and just walked around one night and found some food, but not with a tour guide. Let’s find what’s fun, let’s meet cool local people. And the hotel we stayed at, I’ve never seen anything like it. It was so beautiful. Australia was one of my favourites too. My boyfriend is Australian, so getting to go there and perform for his family and friends was insane and really important. It was a really cool bonding experience.

You played to huge audiences in Australia – more than 25,000 people in several places.
Even though I’d never been there before, my albums have always been really successful in Australia. It’s one of the places that my albums kind of blow up, and my singles. It looks really good when your boyfriend is from there. It’s like, “Hey, I sold this place out.” That makes you feel pretty awesome.

You’ve been making movies lately. Tell us about So Undercover and LOL: Laughing Out Loud.
There are things I do for me, and there are things I do for the fans, and So Undercover was something I really wanted to do for the fans. It’s the kind of comedy that they’re used to seeing on my show. It’s more for the 13-, 14-, 15-, 16-year-old crowd. LOL: Laughing Out Loud is still for the younger kids, but we did it independently and we shot it with Demi Moore and me. It’s more like real life. It’s a really cool story about a mom and a daughter, and the girl becoming a teenager and the mom going through a midlife crisis, and how a lot of things that they are going through are actually the same. It’s funny how life kind of works like that.

Does Demi Moore make a great mom?
She was an awesome mom. In this movie she was so much like the way she is with her own daughters. She’s so amazing. She’s been in the industry since she was my age and has gone through a ton of stuff. She’s taking her time and gone away to raise her kids, and come back and shown you can still have a real life and be in this industry. Every day I would learn from her. Hopefully I can take what she did to the next step.

You don’t have any other movies fixed up right now, do you?
I’m in the middle of going back and forth on a couple of films and trying to figure out what I really want to do. Right now I just want to focus on the sort of movies that I would rush to go see. There have been a few films that have been brought to me that have been interesting, but nothing is definite. I just want a really good game plan right now. This is when I’m going to work and this is when I’m going to be off, that sort of thing. Hopefully, by the end of this year I’ll be working on something.

Do you want to do serious drama?
What I watch and the movies I like to do…I’ve got kind of a weird, dark sense of humour, really dry humour, so I would love to do more comedies, but not the comedies that people have seen me in. More kind of dry, that kind of style, independently shot, but also some laugh-out-loud funny stuff and drama as well. When you become a character, you want to make sure that it’s a part you want to open up and explore for yourself. So I think the next few things…there’s a comedy that I’m working on now and something a little darker.

I have two teenage daughters, about six years apart. Both follow your career after Hannah Montana. That suggests that you appeal to a broader base than many think.
People have very mixed opinions on me; I’m a great role model, or I’m completely inappropriate for anyone under 13 and I am controversial. I don’t know how I became this. There was this magazine article the other day, showing all the younger celebrities. I was the Girl Next Door or whatever, and I fell under the category of Good Girl Gone Bad. And I was like, “What the hell, man?” I stay in the house pretty much every day. I don’t go out. I’ve had same boyfriend for two years. So I think there are two very different reviews.

I think the ones who do look up to me as a role model… I think it’s because I’m so real. If they tell you that I haven’t tried this or haven’t experimented with that, they’re lying. And I’ll never do that because personally I can’t, because there will be some proof on the internet. It’s weird…two complete extremes. I’m not some crazy lady who’s gone off the deep end, because I definitely haven’t. I just always try to be real. Every 18-year-old explores sexuality and experiments and tries things. For me there’s no reason to change that. You have to be true to yourself. [Veteran rocker] Joan Jett has been in my life over the past year and has taught me a lot about that. She got locked down for talking about sexy and drugs or whatever. They were life, “How dare a woman say that. How dare a girl come out admit those things,” when every other girl her age was doing the same thing. She just went on stage and sang about it.

My last album, Can’t Be Tamed, was such a statement for women everywhere. The song “Liberty Walk“, I wrote it about abuse and women but put down. I think the last album is what made the older fans follow me. Who I am now is very different from who I was when I was 11. I had to grow up extremely quick. When you live in LA you see a lot. You are exposed to a lot more than people in other places. That’s just LA, especially in show business.

Is there anything that people don’t know about you that might surprise them?
I think people who meet me, especially if you come into my space where I live – it’s weird describing myself this way – I think it’s kind of how simple my life is. I’m really driven, obviously, I’ve always been that way, but my life is just really mellow, and I like hanging out. I think if they walked into where I live, they’d realise how the [public] perception of me is so different from who I really am. My dad is Native American, so I spend 90 percent of my time outside, going on hikes. That’s my lifestyle right now.

The press seems to think that I’m trying to make this big turn and become a bad girl, and really I’m trying to be more connected with the Earth, more connected with myself and figure out who I am, try to understand the world a little more. I’m not doing this for anyone else but me. I just had this talk a few nights ago with my mum – just about looking at life in a completely different way. I’ve obviously been very blessed, but with every blessing there’s a curse. I’m very content with where my life is right now. People would be shocked to know that I’m very thankful for what I have, but my career is not my main priority, it’s not my life anymore. I really just want to enjoy life and explore nature and become who I am to the fullest.

Efter många år i Kalifornien, är du en country eller stadstjej?
Jag är inte ett stort fan av LA. Om jag ska vara ärlig. Jag tycker om att jag har möjligheten att jobba här, men första chans att åka tillbaka till hem (Till Tennessee), Jag älskar det! Folk tar verkligen livet för givet i Kalifornien.
Det görmig ledsen ibland. Så jag ger mig själv en "verklighets-koll" ibland och åker hem.
Alla (I LA) är så upptagna och alla försöker vara bättre än de andra och alla har så mycket på gång. Nashville livet är bara så avspänt och folk njuter av varje sekund av livet de har.

Saknar du Hannah Montana?
Nej (skrattar). Jag saknar familje känslan, men jag saknar inte rutinen det minsta. Jag var så utråkad över att göra samma sak varje dag Det är mycket lättare att inte hålla på med en show, att få leva livet lite och göra  några av sakerna jag jag vill göra, jag behöver inte vara tillbaka vid en viss tidpunkt. Du oroar dig inte över ett rollschema eller vad producenterna kommer tycka.

Jag är så tacksam över att jag hade tillgången till att vara med på den serien, men även min lillasyster, som är 11, vill börja med skådespeleri. Jag säger bara "Vänta bara, kompis". För att sättet du kommer vara när du var i min ålder och sättet du kommer vara nu är så annorlunda.
Sätt inte dig själv i en situation då folk kommer tycka om dig som bara en sak.
Du kommer förändras mycket. Det kommer störa din uppväxt om du inte är stark nog och inte säker på vem du vill vara. Jag är glad över att jag inte är en karaktär längre och att jag kan vara jag.

Medans du filmade HM, fantiserade nu någonsin om ett hemligt liv som en vanlig skoltjej som din karaktär?
Det fanns stunder, definitivt, som jag tyckte att det skulle vara fantastiskt. Det finns vissa artister som har chansen att göra den typen av grej- folk som har så annorlunda personlighet när de är på scen och i vardagen.- Och det är den sortens grej jag gör just nu. Men det var stunder under HM som jag ville det, definitivt. 

Vad för grejer skulle du göra om du hade ett hemligt liv?
Folk förlorar mycker respekt för andra människor när de får reda på att du är känd, för att de har aldrig upplevt det.
Jag är med min pojkvän,  t ex,  och vi går omkring. Vi tror att ingen tar bild på oss, vi är säkra på det. Ingen har förföljt oss. Ingen är där, och några timmar senare, så är det livet "Miley Cyrus alert". Hon var sedd med ett fan ofentligt, de kysstes och kramades, och jag bara "Vafan? Jag såg ingen som tåg foto på oss den dagen." Jag tror det är det som jag hade tyckt om mest, att bara kunna gå omkring ofentligt utan att känna att jag är bevakad.
Asså min pappa och jag, vi är ganska bra med våra fans. Vi har inget emot att ta bild bara de frågar. Men de frågar inte, det är en helt annan nivå av konstigt

Gypsy Heart Turnén var tidigare i år, och du åkte till ett par coola ställen i Syd America och Australien. När du är på turne, har du tid att vara en vanlig turist?
Jag ser till att jag har det. Jag har velat gå på turné ett tag, vara "on the road". Men jag hade den här turnén främst eftersom jag ville resa, jag älskar att resa. Jag såg till så att jag gjorde en show och sedan hade 2 dagar ledigt. Jag fick uppleva platser mycket. Det var roligt för att på vissa platser fanns det ingen kontroll och jag kunde inte gå omkring, medans andra länder var superrespektfulla och folk ville att jag skulle ha det bra i deras land. Det finns vissa platser jag skulle vilja åka tillbaka tilll och se mer av, men vara lite mer okänd

Var det vissa platser som stod ut mer än andra på turnen?
Jag är kär i Argentina. Jag skulle inte ha något emot att stanna där ett tag för att jag hade roligast i Argentina. Vi gick ut och bara gick omkring en natt och vi hittade lite mat,  men inte med en guide. Låt oss hitta vad som är roligt, låt oss träffa några coola local invånare. Och hotellet vi bodde på, jag har aldrig sett något liknande. Det var så vackert. Australien var en av mina favoriter med. Min pojkvän (Liam) är australiensare så att få åka dit och uppträda för hans familj och vänner var helt galet och väldigt viktigt. Det var en cool "lära-känna-varandra" upplevelse.

Du spelade för en gigantisk publik i Australien- mer än 25, 000 personer på olika platser.
Även fast jag aldrig har varit där förut så har mina album varit väldigt framgångsrika i Australien. Det är en av platserna där mina album liksom bröt fram, och mina singlar. Det ser riktigt bra ut när ens pojkvän kommer därifrån. Typ "Hey, jag sålde ut det här stället". Det får dig att känna dig ganska grym.

Du har gjort många filmer nyligen, berätta om So Undercover och LOL: Laughing out loud.
Det är saker jag gör för mig och saker jag gör för mina fans och So Undercover var någonting jag verkligen ville göra för fansen. Det är den sortens komedi som de är vana att se på min show (Hannah Montana). Det är mer för 13, 14, 15,16-åringar. LOL: Laughing out loud är fortfarande för de yngre barnen, men vi gjorde den mer självständig och vi filmade med Demi Moore och mig. Det är mer som riktiga livet. Det är en cool historia om en mamma och hennes dotter och om hur dottern håller på och bli tonåring och hur mammma går igenom 40-årskrisen och hur många av sakerna de går igenom faktiskt är ganska like. Det är underligt hur livet fungerar så.

Är Demi Moore en bra mamma?
Hon var en fantastisk mamma. I den här filmen var hon så mycket som hon är med sina egna döttrar. Hon är så fantastisk. Hon har varit i industrin sedan hon var i min ålder och hon har gått igenom massor av saker. Hon har tagit tid och backat för att ta hand om sina barn och komma tillbaka och visa att du kan ha ett riktigt liv i den här industrin. Varje dag lär jag av henne. Förhoppningsvis så kan jag göra som henne...

Hon döptes till Destiny Hope Cyrus när hon föddes men när hon blev äldre bytte hon legalt namn till Miley eftersom alla kallade henne det.
